The 2007 FOP trip will consist of three very busy days of touring 14 localities in the northern Kenai Mountains and western Kenai Peninsula, where we will examine evidence of the last major glaciation and subsequent events and present opportunities to discuss the glacial, fluvial, lacustrine, marine, seismic, volcanic, vegetation, and fire histories.
TRANSPORTATION:
Trip participants are responsible for their own transportation.
However, due to the fact that the participant list is getting rather
large, we are coordinating carpooling. There are currently 6 open
seats for riders from Fairbanks….and possibly some room for students in
the UAF Geology department van.
MEETING UP:
The trip will start at Turnagain Pass at 9:00 Saturday morning
(9/1). The trip leaders will be waiting for folks at the big
turnout (with bathrooms) on the north side of the Seward Hwy at mile
68.4. We will have some sort of FOP sign displayed.
People are responsible for their own camping Friday night. Trip leaders will be camped at site #4 Granite Creek Campground near Turnagain Pass on Friday (8/31). There are quite a few sites available for that night and each site can accommodate 2 cars (tents) and up to 8 people. You are welcome to find us there...and bring instruments :-) From Anchorage, go south on Seward Hwy approx 64 miles. Turn at milepost 63, campground is on the left. If you want to stay at Granite Creek Campground you can make reservations on line up to 5 days in advance at www.recreation.gov (FYI - the website says it is 11.00 per night...but they don't tell you about the additional $9.00 booking fee until you go to pay). We have not researched other camping options in the area.
COSTS:
Trip participants will be responsible for paying for camping in Homer
(We'll betaking up a collection - probably no more than $10.00 per
person). People who plan to participate in the optional 3rd day of the
trip will need to pay $60.00 for a water taxi (you pay the
vendor). Trip participants are also responsible for their own
camping equipment, food and cooking.
We will bring printed copies of the draft guidebook (without plates) to distribute at no charge. If you want the 6 BEAUTIFUL, offset printed, color plates that Patty will be picking up at the printer in Anchorage on her way down to the Kenai, you will need to purchase them for about $30.00 (well worth it). If you do that, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys will mail the final version of the guidebook to you once it is published (probably later in this fall). We will collect checks or cash for the maps and guidebook when we distribute the plates.
SIGNING UP:
Please RSVP to Patty Burns by Friday 8/24 if you want to be added to Alaska Cell FOP e-mail list pburns@gi.alaska.edu
(she will be out of e-mail contact after Tuesday, 8/28). Please
be sure to indicate whether you need a ride and if you will be
attending the optional 3rd day of the trip.
Hope to see you on the Kenai!
